article is entirely theoretical giving an overview about the general&nbsp;ideas in sociolinguistics during the last 60 years. Main concepts of macro- and microsociolinguistics,&nbsp;as well as the methods of dialectology and the new trends in the scope&nbsp;of ecolinguistics, are discussed. Goals and principles of language policy and language&nbsp;planning established in the 60es and 70es of the 20th century undergo signifi cant changes&nbsp;in the beginning of 21th century \u2013 time, defi ned as era of globalization and new linguistic&nbsp;order. Saving language and cultural diversity arises as a new task and challenge for<br \/>sociolinguists, which, is fact, are involves in the paradigm and the ethic of ecolinguistics.&nbsp;East European experience in sociolinguistics as an interdisciplinary fi eld is taken&nbsp;into consideration. The paper synthesises the attempt in the Bulgarian terminology&nbsp;studies to create terms by means of terminological metonymy and terminological&nbsp;metaphor. Particular attention is given to word associations formed by proximity or&nbsp;similarity of shape and not by logical thinking which follows our ability to combine,&nbsp;by various principles, our ideas and notions of the real objects. The objective of the&nbsp;proposed model for terminology construction is to pinpoint association \u2013 it does not&nbsp;require any effort and is a psychological peculiarity of each person. Association is&nbsp;the fi rst stage, the initial whim of the individual, and occurs by chance. The second&nbsp;stage is metaphorisation and metonymisation which are \u201etransfer of the transfer\u201c of&nbsp;the meaning which has appeared associatively, but which has been then rationalised<br \/>and directed to the respective context with a respective aim, then adapted for a&nbsp;specifi c research area.
